The Basics of Using Twitter

Just because the social networking service of Twitter has caught on hugely doesn’t mean that everybody already knows how to use it. Although Twitter has an intuitive and easy to learn interface, below are some tips that will help Twitter newbies navigate the basics.

Choose Your Username Carefully

Your username and your user pic will be seen by everyone every time you send out a new tweet, so make sure that you choose it carefully. Generally, it’s best that it is the name of your business or something highly similar. Because Twitter has reached such a level of immersion on the Internet, it’s likely that if you have a common business name then it will be taken. You could add your city to it, or find some other way to differentiate it. Finally, you could also use the specific interest of your business for your username.

Character Limitations

The single aspect of Twitter that catapulted the service to the level of fame that it has been enjoying for awhile now is the character limit: 140. This means that no matter what you may want to broadcast, you have to do so within 140 characters. This limit includes any hyperlinks, names, user account names, or any punctuation marks – so choose each character carefully!

Make New Friends

Just about any social networking platform has a method of making friends and seeing what they are up to, and Twitter is no different. With Twitter, this is called Following, and it means that on your homepage you will see all of the new tweets from those people that you are following. Similarly, in order for people to receive your tweets on their homepage, you need to be followed by them.

One of the best ways to generate new followers is to look around at people with similar interests to your business, and to follow them. Hopefully, and often, they will look at your Twitter feeds and profile, and then follow you. With any luck, they will also retweet your tweets – meaning even more exposure, more followers, and more Twitter success.

Similarly, you’ll want to make sure to follow people that follow you pretty much all of the time.

How To Build Your Twitter Followers

Twitter has become one of the biggest social networking platforms on the world, and the business potential is almost limitless. However, just like with any other platform, you have to find a way to reach those users effectively. Read on to find some tips to broaden your reader base.

Make Your Persona Known

The first thing that you should do after signing up for Twitter and selecting a username is to fill out the Bio section and upload or design a Twitter image of some sort. While filling out a Bio may seem like second nature to some, many neglect how important this simple gesture can be. Filling this out is a simple and quick way for a potential followers to get an idea of who you are. Similarly, developing a great Twitter user pic can make it easy for potential followers to quickly identify you as someone they’re interested in following. Your business logo can work great for this.

Also, it should go without saying to make sure that your Tweets are set to public and not private.

Direct Traffic to Your Tweets

Whether you use one of Twitter’s custom buttons or write your own code, make sure that your website, personal page, and any other social networking websites have your Twitter account prominently listed. You can even have your Tweets broadcast on your website using a few simple scripts, just make sure that there’s a link to your Twitter account nearby.

Choose Your Timing Carefully

The peak time of usage on Twitter is on Friday, at 4PM EST. This means that you should save your best material, whether it’s a clever line or a great sale, for around this time period. This will get your tweet re-tweeted as many times as possible, and nothing is as great as getting new followers as word of mouth.

Make Many Friends

Every time someone new begins to follow you, you should also follow them. This will not only place your Twitter name right on their profile, but will also let you know whenever they re-tweet a tweet of yours. Plus, it’s just a nice thing to do.

How to Make Money Online for Beginners – Twitter

Twitter is a social media outlet that has the ability to “tap” a world-wide  audience in to listening what you have to say. Many people are on it and many people don’t understand it. It’s a very useful tool for how to make money online for beginners. It’s free to join, requires almost no setup, and has the ability to generate a good income for you.

To join, you simply register your name, username, and email address. Once you login you can begin tweeting. Which is the act of typing in the text box, less than 140 characters. You can follow people and they will begin following you.

If you tweet well with good content and conversation, you will gain many followers and begin promoting links to them. Links to affiliate programs you may have joined on Clickbank or Paydotcom. Due to the character limit of Twitter, it’s best to shorten all URLS. There are many free programs online that will do this for you and track the statistics of how many people clicked on your link. (I like bit.ly).

If you track your links through a URL shortening program then you can see what tweets got more clicks than others. This will help you optimize your ad copy for each link and will also tell you the best times for your followers.

Just because you can sell to these people all the time doesn’t mean you should. If you’re spammy or salesy all the time, you will lose followers or you will only gain followers who will do the same to you. No income will come from this.

You don’t have to be on Twitter all the time to get full use out of it. You can also plug your tweets in a future Twitter program and they can be scheduled to go out any day or time you’d like. This is good for middle of the night tweets or setting it up for the weekend.

Typically you should devote about 30 minutes a day on Twitter. Tweeting quotes, interesting webpages, your affiliate links, conversations with people who ask questions, and Re-tweeting interesting things from your followers. You can plug all those into the future tweet program, log off and you’re done for the day.

It would be best before you begin promoting your links on Twitter to get a good Twitter tutorial to learn the ins and outs of Twitter so you have better results and a less likely chance of having your account suspended for violating Terms of Service. Twitter is a great tool for how to make money online for beginners if used correctly and within the spirit of social media.

4 Ways to Use Twitter Lists for Marketing

twitter1Ok, so maybe you have a Twitter account set up and have started checking out the site, or maybe you’re still among the ranks of small business owners who haven’t found that compelling reason to get off the sidelines and start trying to use the site. Recently, Twitter launched a new feature that allows users to create lists of people on Twitter … making the site infinitely more useful for users who need some help navigating the flood of information that comes from the site.

1. Improve your PR “hit rate.” For several years now, there have been people who you might consider “influencers” in just about any industry creating content online. In your industry, that might be online reviewers, or bloggers, or key contributors to online communities. The problem for some time has been that it is increasingly difficult to capture their attention. As more large businesses launch “blogger outreach” campaigns, the attention of these influencers (bloggers or otherwise) is becoming more and more difficult the capture. Luckily, getting “coverage” on Twitter is often a much more simple ask. As a result, if you focus on asking to be mentioned through a Twitter stream, you can make it much more likely that someone will share their experience with you, or a useful message more readily through Twitter.

2. Get listed. The way Twitter lists work is that anyone can create a grouping of people or organizations on Twitter and put them into categories. These lists can be followed in bulk, which answers one of the biggest questions about Twitter … how can anyone find new people to follow, and how you can get new followers. With a search, you can now find lists of Twitter users that relate to the category your business is in. In many cases, you can approach the creator of the list with a request to add your business to the list if it is relevant. With a few hours of effort, this means you could connect with the most visible list creators online and dramatically improve the chances that people will find and follow your Twitter account.

3. Create your own collection. If there is any lesson that social media can teach you, it is that demonstrating your business as have expertise in a particular space can have big benefits, whether it is a services based business, or you have a product to sell. One of the ways to demonstrate that expertise that doesn’t require you to write new content or create multimedia such as videos is simply using the Twitter lists feature to create a new list on any topic. For example, if you have an interior design business – go out and find the 25 best Twitter accounts talking about interior design and create a list. Then you can email this list to people in your industry, share it through Twitter. Anyone who sees the list and its creator (you and your business), will immediately begin to perceive you as a thought leader and expert … if they don’t already.

4. Monitor for moments to respond. One of the best things about Twitter is that in the stream of real time dialogue are always questions from people seeking a response. With every post having a time and date stamp, it is very easy to dip into Twitter at any time to see who is having a particular question that relates to your business and exactly when they asked it. Taking this information, you can start to answer questions directly to people and share your point of view and expertise. Doing so can not only give you a chance to connect with potential customers directly, but also to have a “viral conversation” … in other words, a conversation with an individual that could easily be shared by others and passed around the web.

Marketing Your Business On Twitter

twitter-marketingAs we all know, Twitter is great for social interaction with people around the world, but as a tool for your business…it’s invaluable. Twitter is being used more and more for marketing your business, but it’s more than just marketing. It’s for making deeper connections for you and your business. You can also promote products on there through affiliate marketing, or getting people to tweet your website or product or even have them retweet it.
You can tweet your blog posts, you can tweet specials you’re having on your website, you can tweet affiliate programs to earn money, and you can interact with your customers (very important in relationship building). Using Twitter in your business endeavors is one of the great ways to establish yourself as an expert in your field. You can not only tell others about your website…but you can (and should) also give little nuggets of information or wisdom.
Once you have established yourself as a good Twitterer then people will respond to your tweet, they may even look forward to it because they enjoy that interaction with you or you provide such great content that they can use it for their day, retweet it to their followers, or just have a conversation with you.
Giving quality tweets to your followers is of the utmost importance. When you provide quality tweets, the likelihood of your followers RT’ing (Re-Tweeting) you is high, which in turn will provide more followers for you if others find you valuable.
You can also host a Tweetup with other people in a local area and this type of event brings people together and lumps everyone’s followers together as well. In this setting you have access to other people’s followers because they’re tweeting about you and you’re tweeting about them. A Tweet up is a physical event where everyone (usually locally) gets together and tweets! It’s a great way to get a lot of new followers and lots of attention to your name!
To show that you’re really contributing to Twitter, you should reply to people you follow, RT (re-tweet) their interesting posts, and have conversations with other people. You want to show that you’re not a robot or someone who only wants to toot their own horn. You want to connect with others. You could always set up auto-tweets about your business or affiliate links at night and during the day have real conversations with people. Twitter is a great communication and relationship tool.
Tweet your business and yourself, and both will grow!
Provide value to the twitter community, and you’ll see much faster success!

How NOT To Get Twitter Slapped!

twitter-logoDid you know that you could get in trouble for doing things like following too many people in one day, using auto-follow too often, and having “questionable” tweets? Twitter is cracking down more and more on the Tweeps (that’s Twitter people) who are only using Twitter to spam.
It’s called getting “Twitter Slapped” and it’s the last thing you want to have happen to your account. A “Twitter Slap” is where Twitter suspends your account for a week (or longer) because they deemed your account as spam or as being questionable if a human is using it or it’s a robot running the show.
This is how NOT to get Twitter slapped, and then I’ll tell you how to get your account back.
1) Don’t follow too many people in a day by using an autofollow. You should manually follow your followers or find them yourself using search features. A lot of programs offer auto-follow, through keywords or mass following programs. You can safely mass follow people through sites like Tweepular. But those people may not be interested in your kind of tweets. Stick to manual.
2) You can use a service to unfollow those who are not following you (called “Tweepular”), but use this tool every few days. Mass unfollowing people so you can follow more people will send a red flag to Twitter. You can safely unfollow a few each day if you need to clear up your list, but do so manually.
3) You can set up a service to Auto-Tweet or Tweet Later, but don’t use this exclusively. You must Tweet yourself a few times each day. Twitter knows when you’re using a program to send auto-tweets. If you do chose to use auto-tweets then space out the tweets sporadically.
Of course you can do all of these things and you may or may not get Twitter slapped, but if you do… it will take more than a week to get it back. It will take you emailing Twitter support a few times and then they’ll get back to you and reactivate it. You may not get it back at all, but I’ve seen Twitter be very kind about this and basically slapping someone on the wrist, telling them not to do it again.
If Twitter does not get back to you after your first attempt at contacting them, then keep at it! I actually ended up sending 20 e-mails over the course of 3 days telling them to re-instate my account. Yup, that’s right, I got twitter slapped!
Remember…follow the simple advice above and you’ll keep from experiencing the same frustrations that I did :-)
