parents3Are you a parent?  Do you want the freedom to work on your own schedule and spend more time with your family?  If so, a home based business is perfect for you.  Home based business success may be right around the corner.  What is home based business success for a parent?  It is running a successful and profitable business from home, while being able to spend more time with your family.

Sound good doesn’t it but, getting started isn’t always as easy as it sounds.  See, lots of parents in your shoes make costly mistakes.  You can poise yourself for home based business success by not only knowing a few of these common mistakes, but by also knowing how to avoid them.

So are you ready for home based business success?  Here are some mistakes you want to avoid.  Remember, home based business success is about making money, not wasting time.

Home Based Business Success Mistake #1 – Not Setting Aside Work Time

Since you are parent starting a business from home, you may literally be working with your child at your feet.  When you look down, you may realize that home based business success isn’t as easy as most people make it out to be.  If you want to achieve home based business success, you must not only create a schedule, but make every attempt to keep it.  This means if you say you are going to work four hours from 10am to 2pm, you should work it.

Home Based Business Success Mistake #2 – Treating Your Job as a Hobby

The number one mistake that most parents make is treating their business as a hobby.  The number one rule of home based business success is to treat your job as a job.  It sound silly, but it is true.  Even if you are only working to raise some extra cash, consider the possibilities.  With home based business success, you could easily go from buying groceries each week to supporting your family.  By achieving home based business success, your options and your earnings know no limits!

Home Based Business Success Mistake #3 – Not Doing the Proper Research

As you know, home based businesses come in all different formats.  You can offer your babysitting services in-house, work as a freelance writer, made homemade clothes to sell and more.  There are countless ways to start a home based business.  However, to see home based business success, you must do the research first.  Some businesses work better than others and are more profitable.  Despite what we are often told about home based business success on late night infomercials; you cannot make money in your sleep.  To see home based business success, you must put forth the effort.

In short, home based business success isn’t impossible if you are a parent.  It may take a little bit more work, but home based business success is possible.  In reality, home based business success just takes is a good business idea and the drive and determination to turn your goals into reality.

More Information Overload

caroverloadI spoke on information overload before, but lately I’ve been seeing another surge in people hungry for information and absolutely overdoing it.

This information you keep reading means NOTHING unless you actually IMPLEMENT them. The reason I’m talking about it now is because of a little story I’m going to tell you.

So I’m on the phone with a guy for one of my strategy sessions and he wants to drive traffic to his website. So I ask him what his domain is. He doesn’t have one. So I asked if he signed up to a membership site or network marketing, and where his website is. He doesn’t have a website. He’s never joined anything, he has no domain, he has no website. But he really needs to know how to drive traffic to a site that doesn’t exist!

He said he wanted to have everything in place before he gets his domain and builds his website. At this pace, he’ll never get anything done because the sheer volume of information out there is endless. He’ll constantly learn and never act.

Here’s a challenge I’ll post to you… whatever you read about today that tells you to do something (within your power) DO IT. Don’t sit and think on it, just get out there and do it. See what kind of results you get by acting that fast.

Successful Home Business - What Are Your Odds?

Risk in your Home BusinessWhen you think of home businesses, you probably imagine some kind of rag-tag operation. You know, low budget, unknown, no real chance of success. Well, you really couldn’t be more off base. Some of the most successful and well known companies in our modern culture got their start as small, home based businesses. Ford, Hewlett-Packard, Hershey’s, Apple, and Mary Kay cosmetics are just a few of the big names that are nothing more than home businesses that were extremely successful.

So, what are the chances that you can be successful too? Believe it or not, you’re the chance that your home business will be a success is better than you might think. Statistically, about 70% of home based businesses will be successful over a 3 year period. That is compared to 29% with other business ventures. Not bad odds. That’s a 7 in 10 chance that your business is going to make it for at least three years. Wouldn’t it be great if all of the chances you took in your life had those kinds of odds?

It is perfectly acceptable to be apprehensive when contemplating starting up a home business. I am sure that Milton Hershey and Henry Ford had their own sets of doubts before finally deciding to take the plunge and go for it. But if they hadn’t overcome their fears, they would not be the household names that we have come to recognize today. Taking the first step towards running your home business is undoubtedly the most challenging and stressful. However, in order to be successful, you need to have a certain willingness to take chances and make the choices that will lead to your success.

It is important to realize that, especially in today’s job market, you cannot depend on anyone else to ensure your job security. With unemployment pushing ten percent and more and more established businesses going under by the day, working for someone else is no guarantee of security or success. And the only way to ensure that your boss is looking out for your interests is to be your boss. The single most important element that will contribute your home businesses success is your attitude. If you know you will be successful, you are that much more likely to become successful. And looking into the statistics regarding home business success rates and seeing them in black and white can only boost your confidence. Remember, no matter what anyone might say, a successful home business in by no means a fantasy. Successful home businesses are started every day, and if you are willing to put forth the effort, yours could be next.

Successful Home Business - Do What You Know

Successful Home BusinessOne of the keys to success with any home business is, quite simply, not making things harder than they have to be. Do what you know. You will be more confident, and your confidence will only contribute to your level of success. I mean, would you rather buy goods and/or services from someone who knows what’s up or someone who doesn’t?

The home business opportunities that currently exist are infinite. So why not tap into a skill, talent, or hobby that you already have? When considering options for your business, simply ask yourself what it is that you can do better than others around you. Make a list of areas in which you excel. It should be a comprehensive list, because you never know what skill or hobby you may be able to cultivate into a paying gig. Seriously, did anyone really think that there would be a dog walking industry? Don’t sell yourself short by underestimating yourself.

After you have compiled an all-inclusive list of things you are good at, take a good, long, realistic look at what’s in front of you. Of the abilities on your list, which ones are marketable? Meaning, which ones could be translated into a good or service exceptional enough to convince people to part with their hard earned money in order to attain it? Which ones could you see yourself turning into a successful home business? Compose a second list that contains only the things that you could reasonably expect to sell.

By this time, your list should contain only things that you like, are good at, and could reasonably expect to turn a profit by doing. Now you have to consider the mechanics of turning these ideas into money. Be honest with yourself. Can you afford the start up costs? How about the long term operation? Are you going to have the space to store inventory? Is this something that you can undertake on your own, or are you going to need a partner, partners or employees? If you expect your home business to be a success, you can’t delude yourself. Look at things objectively, and don’t be afraid to take a little time to make your determinations.

If you are willing to put a little time, effort, and honest introspection into the process, you should end up with one or two clear ideas for home businesses that not only have a high potential for attaining long term success, but are also endeavors you would enjoy undertaking and have a reasonable amount of expertise in. Those factors add up to a winning formula for home business success.
